Kathleen Edwards is from Ottawa, Canada, but because her father is a diplomat, she spent much of her childhood in Switzerland and South Korea. After returning to Canada at the age of 19, she begins to listen to the music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Tom Petty. Later she also discovers artists like Ani DiFranco and Ryan Adams' Whiskeytown. Especially under the influence of the latter two she starts
… writing songs herself. The result is the debut album Failer, which has already been hailed as a new Americana sensation in Canada and America. Despite her young age, Kathleen Edwards is immediately compared to such female luminaries as Lucinda Williams and Aimee Mann. That is not entirely unjustified. The ten own songs on Failer are very well composed and Kathleen can sing like the best. Her voice sounds like a cross between the aforementioned Lucinda Williams, Suzanne Vega and that other 'beautiful singer' Laura Cantrell. The musical accompaniment ranges from traditional country to spicy, Neil Young-esque rock. Highlights are the single Six O'Clock News, the humorous One More Song The Radio Won't Like and the daring wind arrangement in the song 12 Bellevue. Conclusion: Failer is not a failure. On the contrary: it is a successful debut by a very talented singer / songwriter. (MvP) Neil Young-esque rock.
