Terry Callier was making acoustic soul long before the word was invented. In the sixties and seventies he was a sensation in Chicago and the surrounding area, but because the great success failed to materialize and he also took care of his daughter after the divorce from his wife, he left music. Six years ago a re-release of his song I Don't Want To See Myself became a great success on the club
… circuit in England and from that moment the ball started rolling again. On Speak Your Peace, Terry Callier has found in Jean-Paul Maunick and Marc Mac the perfect producers to capture his mix of soul, jazz, pop, and poetry. They understood that Callier's sensitive songs needed to be subtly recorded. That is why Callier's warm, refined voice and beautiful guitar playing were central. This was further perfected by the use of soft rhythms, well-placed violins, hand drums and plenty of room for his poetic lyrics. And that easily makes this album the most beautiful and consistent since his return. (RM)more
