The front man of nu-metal millionaires Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst, is often accused of making meaningless music as well as only looking for commercial gain. The fact remains that with his earned dollars he has founded his own record label and gives promising young bands a chance. One of these bands is Puddle Of Mudd. What is immediately noticeable and relief is that nu-metal is hard to find. Although
… the band sounds heavy and modern, influences from grunge are especially audible. With his dark voice, singer Scantlin is a cross between Layne Staley from Alice In Chains and Gavin Rossdale from Bush. Musically, however, Puddle Of Mudd is most close to the former. Combined with the modern sound of mixer Andy Wallace, this leads from solid groovy to calm and carried. Come Clean is a cheerful picture, as can be seen from song titles like Drift & Die, Bring me down and Said. The exception is the cheerfully hopping She Hates Me, which shows remarkable similarities with Ugly Kid Joe's hit song Everything About You. Puddle Of Mudd is forgiven because Come Clean is just a great record. (RWK)more
