NERD's music is hard to pigeonhole. It has the 'attitude' of hip-hop, but it is hardly rapped. R&B then? Also not, the straightforward vocals of singer Pharell Williams are nothing like the vocal acrobatics that are common in the genre. Let's just say that the guys from NERD know how to unite the best of both worlds. And in a fairly unique way, too. Especially in the field of production, a number
… of colleagues will be scratching their heads hard. The sound of NERD sounds rough, contemporary but above all: human. They don't need samples, all instruments are simply played by themselves in the old-fashioned way. It provides an organic sound that distinguishes itself in a pleasant way from the majority of computer-controlled productions. In its unbridled inventiveness, NERD evokes associations with Beck, but also with Outcast's cheerful hip-hop. NERD adds a good dose of humor in perspective and a predilection for song structures from (white) rock and pop and thus comes up with an irresistible album. (MS)more
