Queen of the minor key, the American Eilen Jewell was once called. A nickname that she gladly accepted and after which she even named her in 2011. But on her tenth album Gypsy she shows that she is now much more than an interpreter of small and minor tear-jerks. Gypsy is a colorful collection of roots songs full of country rock, bluegrass, blues and honky tonk. The atmosphere is loose and informal,
… with cheerful wailing fiddle, lap steel guitar and even a singing saw in the bittersweet anti-Trump song 79 Cents (The Meow Song). Of course there are also moody and sad ballads, such as the title track and Witness. But Gypsy mainly shows a singer who feels good about herself and has earned her own place in American roots music.
