Jimmy Scott was born James Victor Scott in Cleveland, Ohio in 1925. For many years his stage name was 'Little Jimmy Scott' and that had to do with a) his small size and b) the fact that in jazz circles there was already another Jimmy Scott (the conga player). After the latter died in 1986, the former renamed himself Jimmy Scott, and by coincidence he was rediscovered in the early 1990s when he sang
… the song Someone To Watch Over Me at Doc Pomus' funeral. Shortly after, the humble masterpiece All The Way appeared and suddenly Jimmy Scott was all the way back at the top. When Lou Reed asked him to sing on his Magic And Loss (1992) the hype was complete. In the years that followed, he also received the necessary attention in our country thanks to a performance at the Crossing Border festival and a documentary in Het Uur Van De Wolf. On the new album Over The Rainbow, Jimmy Scott does what he still does best: interpreting jazz originals. With his exceptionally high and hoarse voice (sometimes you think you hear a woman singing) often sits right next to the beat in a very deft way. In this way he puts his own stamp on the songs and he achieves that the often well-known songs still sound fresh. Nice examples of this are the title track Over The Rainbow, Everybody's Somebody's Fool and the beautiful closing track When Did You Leave Heaven? (MvP) interpreting jazz originals.
