During the Jazztage 2003 Leverkusen festival, trumpet player Randy Brecker and his brother saxophonist Michael Brecker performed as The Brecker Brothers for years. Accompanied by Jim Beard (keys), Will Lee (bass), Peter Erskine (drums), Marcio Doctor (percussion) and the WDR Big Band Köln led by Vince Mendoza, they performed legendary compositions such as Some Skunk Funk, Sponge, Strap Hanging and
… Song For Barry that put them on the map between 1974 and 1979 as the tightest blazer duo in the world. The addition of the big band takes the sharp edges of their originally raw funky songs, but on the other hand provides them with a beautiful color palette over which the brothers solo with verve. However, Randy Brecker's greatest strength only emerges during Freefall, where he shows that nowadays he feels like a fish in water with bebop. (AD)more
