Barely 16 years old, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington was behind the drums when she joined an absolute all-star band of American jazz musicians. She received help with this from her father Sonny Carrington, who in addition to being a saxophonist was president of the Boston Jazz Society. The session was released in small print, self-released on LP, long enjoyed cult status and has now finally been
… reissued in larger print. It shows an eager and, of course, extremely talented young drummer, who manages to coax veterans such as George Coleman and Kenny Baron into playing strong. But Carrington also sounds especially adrift and restless in a collection of standards, augmented by her own composition La Bonita. Her extended drum solos belong on stage rather than on a record. TLC And Friends is above all a charming album from which the ambition and musicality of the young Carrington shines. (MR)more
