Kinetika Bloco is an organization that has been active in South London since the year 2000. Through music, the foundation wants to offer the many underprivileged young people in the neighborhood a sense of community and future. The young people form a big band that can play on the streets like a brass band and, in the meantime, they receive musical training and are encouraged to adopt an entrepreneurial
… attitude. That the institution has succeeded well in this proves Legacy. All the musicians who contribute to the album have been part of the project at some point in their lives. Some have since gone on to have careers of their own and become household names in the British jazz world. All alumni such as guitarist Artie Zaitz (Moses Boyd Exodus), saxophonist Nubya Garcia, and tuba player Theon Cross (Sons Of Kemet) seem overjoyed to be able to show their gratitude in this way for the opportunities the foundation has given them. The joy of playing shines through and also the arrangements make this an album that never gets boring. The large group manages to create intimate moments during solos, but of course also together in festive highlights. (JV)more
