The guitar is like an extra limb for the American jazz guitarist Corey Christiansen. He teaches at various American conservatories, in the meantime leads his own band and also finds the time to play with various colleagues as a session musician all over the world. Between all these activities, Factory Girl is definitely not a snack but a moody guitar album, floating on Christiansen's natural playing.
Most of the songs are adaptations of American traditional folk songs or frontier songs. But the militancy of the originals is nowhere to be heard on Factory Girl. Above all, it is a pleasant and swinging hard bop and fusion album, played by a strong band. Sometimes even blues and latin can be heard. Christiansen is a skilled rhythmic and melodic guitarist who does not show any fuss, but always remains part of the group sound. And it is precisely this modesty that makes Factory Girl a charming and pleasant album. (MR)more
