Erik Truffaz has been playing with the same quartet since 1999, but with the well-known French trumpet player the beacons are changed anyway. 'Always the same, always different' would be a nice motto for the 55-year-old Truffaz. The trumpet player is innovative, but for each album he also relies on familiar elements, such as the combination of cool jazz and electronic accents. Yet Doni Doni is
… different. It is the first album with the new drummer . Truffaz is also looking towards Africa. The collaboration with the South African dance company Vuyani, just before the release of this CD, apparently triggered something in him. Most prominent guest on Doni Doni is Malian singer whose mysterious voice is an excellent match for Truffaz's sultry trumpet. The brooding Doni Doni floats between cool jazz, now jazz, funk, fusion and African atmospheres. Thanks to that diversity, this album never gets boring. (PdK)more
