Richard Spaven's purely intuitive drum sound has ensured that he has quickly become the most sought-after drummer in the new jazz scene. He started in the noughties with the drum parts on individual broken beat productions, but was soon asked by 4Hero and Mark de Clive-Lowe, producers who combined the tightness of drum computers with the input of live musicians within the now jazz scene. Spaven soon
… moved on to real jazz and was asked by pianist Robert Mitchell, The Cinematic Orchestra and José James. Whole Other is dedicated to his late drumming teacher Freddie Wells, and if he could hear the end result, he certainly wouldn't be disappointed. Spaven places every hit with meticulous precision and modestly tumbles his grooves to great heights. His performances behind the drum kit are such that this time the melody, by way of exception, works more as an accompaniment to the drums than the other way around. (AD)more
