In 2009 Jan Menu has been active for many years as a tenor and baritone saxophonist in Dutch jazz. He won the Loosdrecht Jazz Competition 1989 and received the Wessel Ilcken Trophy. As a permanent member of the trio of singer Greetje Kauffeld, he can be found a lot on national and international stages. He also plays in the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and in the special trio Dig d'Diz. Mulligan
… Moods is Menu's first CD under his own name. He only plays baritone saxophone on this. That's no coincidence, because as the name implies, the album is a tribute to Gerry Mulligan, the most famous baritone saxophonist ever. In keeping with his style, Menu produces a pleasant, husky sound on the large sax. Mulligan was also a gifted composer. That is why nine of the ten compositions on Mulligan Moods are his. In addition to a number of his more famous pieces (for example Walkin 'Shoes) there are some lesser known ballads in the repertoire. The pieces were arranged with reverence and played relaxed by Menu, together with guitarist Jesse van Ruller, bassist Clemens van der Feen and drummer Joost van Schaik. (HB)more
