On their anniversary CD Brazilian Soul (2004) the Brazilian band Azymuth made grateful use of a number of guest vocalists to complement their precision jazz funk. However, their strength lies in purely instrumental work and they must have realized that themselves, because apart from incidental background vocals from the band members, there are no lyrics to be found on this album. Their compositions
… are no longer as tight as in the seventies. It has all become a bit looser and fuller, so that there is less space in the music, which is a pity, because that defined the characteristic Azymuth sound. On Os Cara La this can be heard in the distance, but not as it used to be. This does not detract from the fact that Azymuth is still at the top of Brazilian jazz funk. One must come from a very good place to drive them out of this position.more
