You are never too old to start your own label, 70-year-old pianist and jazz celebrity McCoy Tyner must have thought. The first release from McCoy Tyner Music is Quartet, recorded live by the brand new record boss himself with tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. The CD is the result of two performances at the end of December 2006 at Yoshi's in
… Oakland, California, during which the audience went completely crazy. And rightly so, because these four jazz greats played a fantastic set of modal jazz. Tyner himself showed once again why he was the right person in the sixties to support John Coltrane with his solid sound full of vamps and block chords. In addition, all compositions (except one) were his, including three pieces that he also recorded on his Blue Note classic The Real McCoy. Joe Lovano, with its raw sound, it was a perfect match. McBride and Watts were able to provide the music with an extremely swinging groove like a well-oiled engine. The excellent recording quality also lets you enjoy these exciting recordings at home.
