Indian Summer is the first CD in the Jazz At The Concertgebouw series. Exclusive live recordings made by impresario Lou van Rees during the jazz concerts he organized in the 1950s appear in this series. Baker first came to the Netherlands in 1955 with one of his most interesting groups: the quartet with pianist Dick Twardzik. Twardzik died later that year of a fatal heroin overdose. Baker and drummer
… Peter Littman were also heavily addicted. During the performance, however, nothing could be heard of it. Despite the drug problems and the relatively young age of the band members, the quartet burns in the uptempo parts and sounds very controlled in the slower songs. Unfortunately, the recording of My Funny Valentine has not stood the test of time and is cut short after more than a minute. The rest of the recordings have been optimally restored by sound engineer Servaas Bollen. (AD)more
