At the end of 2006 guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau released the duo CD Metheny-Mehldau. This document of mutual admiration also featured two pieces with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard, Mehldau's regular rhythm section. Metheny Mehldau Quartet is a godsend for the less experienced listener, who has to rely too much on his powers of concentration for the duo CD. Due to the driven work of the rhythm section, the music now relies on subtle grooves, which enhances the listening pleasure a lot. This time, Metheny and Mehldau also let themselves be heard from a completely different side, like Towards The Light where Metheny presses the distortion pedal firmly and Mehldau mans the synthesizer.
