When a jazz musician records a CD entitled Resistance, expectations are often high. Visions of sacred houses being forcefully knocked over then emerge. Saxophonist Courtney Pine apparently sees this differently and mainly opposes what is expected of him. So this time no reggae, ska, afrobeat or hip hop. No, for Resistance, Pine looks back in the great British pop archive from the 1960s. Admittedly
… with a dozen of their own compositions, but the atmosphere and especially the groove of the sixties are unmistakably present on this CD that seems to be entirely inspired by mersey beat, mods, northern soul and gogo. Over that, Pine's sax rages on unstoppably, after all, he has a high reputation as the best saxophonist in England. Resistance has become the most accessible CD in Pine's oeuvre, the purists will walk away from it, but that should not spoil the fun, because the pleasure with which this CD was made radiates from it.
