Guitarist Chuck Loeb started playing the guitar at the age of eleven and discovered jazz at the age of sixteen. He was taught by greats like Jim Hall, Pat Metheny and Joe Puma and went to conservatory. In the seventies he mainly worked as a session guitarist, in 1979 he was asked by saxophonist Stan Getz to play in his group. He did this for two years and back in New York he threw himself into
… session and composition work. In 1989 he released his solo debut Magic Fingers and many albums followed. When I'm With You is a (mainly) instrumental, very slick album that never gets really exciting, but puts Loeb in the foreground sublime. His playing style is jazzy and funky at the same time, which can be heard in his version of The Girl From Ipanema. But he also knows how to handle more modern styles such as house and lounge, for example in Tropical. The only vocal track, When I'm With You, is a very sweet ballad performed by Carmen Cuesta.
