Songbook is the new CD by alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett, accompanied by pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Jeff 'Tain' Watts. The ten songs on this CD are all written by Garrett. The musicians are well attuned to each other. Garrett plays driven and very energetic, as is immediately clear in the opening track 2 Down & 1 Across. Things slow down a bit in November 15. There
… is tribute to other jazz musicians in the 'groovy' Brother Hubbard and The House That Nat Built. Latin-oriented is Ms. Baja. Two ballads are played with great feeling: She Waits For The New Sun and Before It's Time To Say Goodbye. With the uptempo Sounds Of The Flying Pygmies this excellent CD ends.
