With One Kind Flavor, the eighty-two-year-old blues legend BB King releases one of the best CDs of his career at the last minute. Under production direction by T-Bone Burnett and with a close-knit band that includes drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Nathan East and Dr. John behind the piano presents King with a completely different sound than we were used to from him in recent years. Raver, more authentic
… and not dependent on a wide-open gaze of guest artists, he literally sings and plays the stars from heaven. Sometimes he cries out for joy, while in the next song he cries out his grief. The CD bears the characteristic signature of Burnett across the board, who like no other can give the blues a kind of 'film noir' feel, without going too much in the dark direction. His beautiful, full brass arrangements reinforce the feel of the songs. The only downside is the unperturbed Dr. John doing his very best to demand all the attention. (AD)more
