After soundtracks for sinister films like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2010) and Gone Girl (2014), you wouldn't immediately expect Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to say yes to a score for a Pixar children's film. Let it be said that Soul (directed by Pete Doctor) has very mature undertones. In addition, the film contains atmospheric jazz music by Jon Batiste. The film is about a jazz musician
… who undergoes an out-of-body experience and has to find his way back to 'real life'. The moral of the film is that you should enjoy the little things that you might take for granted. The jazz numbers fit in nicely with the liveliness that gives the film its character, while the electronic and piano compositions by Reznor and Ross - unmistakably theirs - fit in better with the exciting and emotional parts of the film. The soundtrack is well worth seeing on its own, but the film certainly deserves to be watched as well. (JvQ)more
