Despite her 62 years of life, Mercedes Sosa has managed to keep her voice intact: this Argentinian singer nicknamed 'La negra' has an impressive dark and warm-hued voice, with which she can express emotions ranging from tender to dramatic. Since 1966 she has released dozens of records, participated in films and festivals and, for example, graced the Christmas concert in the Vatican in 1993 with her
… presence. Her political stand against the dictatorship and for human rights led to her being banned from Argentina for a time. Her repertoire is very extensive and varied and is somewhere in between folk music and pop music: Mercedes mixes traditional samba and tango rhythms with pure rock beats. Also on this CD you can hear Mercedes' unique style of pop music topped with a sauce of typical South American rhythms and instruments (e.g. pan flute). (SvdP) _more
