He had been active in the music business for barely a year and a half, before he was killed in an illustrious plane crash in 1959. In those eighteen months, Buddy Holly wrote and sang countless rock and roll classics, of which That'll Be The Day and Peggy Sue are the best known. Holly's influence on the British beat wave of the 1960s was enormous, as the Beatles modeled their early, simple songs
… after those of Buddy Holly & The Crickets and chose a similar band name. Countless diverse acts such as The Rolling Stones (Not Fade Away), Linda Ronstadt (It's So Easy) and Santana (Well Allright) recorded songs from him. The Definitive Story is a beautifully designed DVD where Holly's career is reconstructed through interviews with former band members and family members. The disadvantage of this approach is that there is relatively little of Holly's music and that should be the point. On the DVD, it is limited to three live performances on the Ed Sullivan Show and an interactive jukebox. Unfortunately, Dutch subtitles are missing. The bonus CD contains a selection of twenty essential songs. (MS)more
