The Donaueschingen Festival is the oldest music festival exclusively devoted to contemporary music. In 1913, Prince Max Egon zu Furstenberg founded the forerunner of this festival: the Gesellschaft für Musik Freunde. The overall objective of the festival was to promote unknown and controversial talent and to try new forms of expression. In the early 1920's the festivals were mainly organized by
… Joseph Haas and Hindemith. Between 1950 and 1970 the artistic responsibility lay with Heinrich Strobel. Numerous key works from the 20th century were premiered at this Festival, including Hindemith's "Kammermusik no.1", Webern's "Six songs op.14", Messiaen's "Chronochromie" and Stockhausen's "Mantra".
