Giacinto Scelsi is a curious and mysterious composer, who is also the author of some of the most exciting orchestral works of the twentieth century. The 1959 'Quattro pezzi su unanote sola' are four examples of Scelsi's restriction to a single pitch. However, he did not become known with these works until the eighties of the 20th century. After initially working with the leading styles of the early
… 20th century, he went in a radically different direction after a mental breakdown. Scelsi was very strongly inspired by Eastern spirituality and Western theosophy. His music is very minimalist, but minimalism under high tension: his music is absolutely not pleasant-meditative. On this CD there is also a great tension with few resources, namely the solo singing voice. Singer Marianne Schuppe performs this intense music on this CD with great success. (TC)more
