Philip Glass once studied philosophy and mathematics, and this is reflected in the subjects of his countless (!) Operas. In these theater works various portraits of cosmologists pass by: Albert Einstein (Einstein on the Beach), Galileo Galilei, Stephen Hawkin (The Voyage) and Kepler. … name was premiered in the Landestheater Linz under the direction of Glass adept Dennis Russel Davies. There is no real storyline in this opera. Cosmological and theological reflections predominate here. The title hero is also the only soloist. An ensemble of six singers moves around this title hero, by analogy with the six planets. The role of the choir is also very extensive. The whole therefore resembles a staged oratorio rather than an opera. The libretto is mostly in German, except for a number of Latin phrases. (HJ)more
