Ouro Preto, city of black gold! This was a common phrase in Brazil in the 18th century. The discovery of gold especially made many gold miners of Portuguese descent travel to Brazil. A culture of its own developed in the city with the associated palaces, villas and churches. The city also contained great musical wealth. Characteristic of the music is the combination of Italian and Portuguese baroque

This CD offers an interesting introduction to the religious repertoire of Luis Alvarez Pinto, José Joaquim Emérico Lobo de Mesquita, Marcos Coelho Neto and José Mauricio Nunes Garcia. Performers are various soloists and Ensemble Turicum conducted by countertenor Luiz Alves da Silva. (LW) _more
