This encounter between Bach and folk music sounds so alternative that it must be an ECM edition: the label that previously mixed the polyphony of the Hilliard Ensemble with saxophone improvisations by Jan Garbarek. Singer Sinikka Langeland did a lot of research into Norwegian folk music in order to compile this program around the Virgin Mary. In the folk song of Protestant Norway, allusions to the
… Mother of God were often covered up with all kinds of metaphors derived from nature. That is why the CD opens with a hymn to the sun: Lova lova Lina ... The pure singing is beautifully alternated with music by Bach for organ and for violin and cello solo (played on viola). Langeland added vocal improvisations here and there to this instrumental music.more
