The American pianist Nicholas Angelich has already distinguished himself in Brahms in various ways. His first recordings for Virgin Classics with Brahms' Trios won the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, while a recording of the Violin Sonatas was voted Gramophone's Editor's Choice. Angelich also took care of both piano concertos. The dramatic First Piano Concerto appeared in the spring of
… 2008. And now it is the turn of the equal-minded Second Piano Concerto, with accompaniment again by Paavo Järvi and the Radio-Symphony-Orchester Frankfurt. In the Second Piano Concerto Angelich and Järvi opt for a predominantly supported approach. Thanks to Angelich's careful touch, this 'heavy' Brahms is nevertheless presented in a very open and insightful manner: note the varying articulations at the very first bet, or the sparkling figurations in the final movement. The Klavierstücke op.76 are the generous addition to this program. (HJ)more
