Westminster Abbey is niet alleen de plek waar de Britse vorsten werden gekroond, het is ook de plek waar Engelands grootste cultuurdragers werden bijgezet. Waaronder Henry Purcell, aan wiens laatste rustplaats zelfs een dubbele betekenis kan worden toegekend. De locatie paste niet alleen bij zijn status als componist, maar het was tevens de ruimte waar hij werkte gedurende de regeerperiodes van Charles II en William & Mary. Van Purcells meest geliefde werk, de opera Dido and Aeneas, kent vrijwel iedereen de aangrijpende slotaria: ‘Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.’ Abstracter, maar niet minder indringend, zijn de briljante Fantasia’s (voor gamba’s) die Purcell aan het begin van de jaren 1680 componeerde: kleine, maar bij vlagen gedurfde experimentjes, die hij vaak tot op de dag nauwkeurig dateerde. Toch ontwikkelde Purcell zich vooral als vocaal componist, met talloze odes, ‘welcome songs’, motetten (anthems), liederen voor huiselijk gebruik (zowel religieus als werelds, zowel één- als meerstemmig) en toneelmuziek.
