Net als Pierre Attaingnant was John Playford geen componist maar een muziek-uitgever. In de 2e helft van de 17e eeuw was hij de belangrijkste muziek-uitgever in Londen - en dus in Engeland, want Londen was vrijwel de enige plek waar veel muziek gedrukt werd. Geliefd was hij niet, want er waren veel jaloerse concurrenten. Hij was wel geliefd bij musici en dichters, bij wie hij een belangrijke rol speelde. Playford gaf vele boeken uit: muziektheorie, lesboeken, liedbundles, bundels met instrumentale muziek en ook liturgische muziek. Zijn bekendste bundels zijn The English dancing master en A Musicall Banquet (beiden uit 1651). Enorm invloedrijk was zijn An Introduction to the Skill of Musick (1654), dat nog decennia later gebruikt en geciteerd zou worden. De werken onder Playford's naam in Muziekweb zijn dus niet door hem gecomponeerd - maar er stonden vaak geen componisten-namen bij, zodat ze alleen bekend zijn uit de bundel die Playford uitgaf.
